Ames True Temper 1137800 Clay Pick Heads Reviews
More Picture
A nice pick head, and with a hickory handle from the local hardware store, it looks just like Grandpa's (I soaked the upper end of the handle in water for an hour, then tapped the head on with a 4 pound hand maul, so it doesn't come loose). This worked well to hack through the hard marine clay and gravel to get to damp soil so I could dig some post holes. The head's about 5 pounds (7 lb total with the hickory handle), 21 inch spread point-to-point, and the flat end is 1-3/8 inches wide. After a couple of dozen holes, the ends don't show any signs of mushrooming, so the steel seems to be reasonably hard. Ames also makes a 6 and 7 pound version (1138700 and 1139600).
